Rajwinder Kaur went missing Sunday night, only to have her absence announced by an ominous text sent to her sister's phone. The text, appearing two hours after she'd left her Queens home to volunteer at a homeless shelter, read, "The girl with this phone is dead was smiling."
That's enough to give any parent a heart attack.
Thankfully, police found Rajwinder unharmed in Dallas, Texas, Thursday afternoon, though an explanation for her disappearance has been hard to come by. NBC4 reports police found Rajwinder after a friend told them of a Dallas-bound bus ticket she had acquired.
Rumors hold the 26-year-old woman was fleeing an arranged marriage, which her family is quick to shoot down. "There’s no truth to it at all,” Kaur’s brother Gary Atwal told the NY Daily News. “In our family we’re very open... we’ve never stopped her from anything. Both of my sisters have been married at their own will so why would we be arranging for our third sister to be married?”
"There are no words to express our sincere gratitude to the NYPD, family, friends and everyone that assisted with this search," Kaur's family said in a statement to the media. "The alarming text message was our biggest concern and we are just relieved that she is alive and well."
After her disappearance, police tracked Rajwinder's phone to Brooklyn where it was shut off, writes MSNBC.
The Daily Mail adds the woman reportedly sold her many of belongings on eBay prior to disappearing, further adding to the mystery.
